- IRCC is looking to digitize the application process for permanent residency online
- The newly launched application tracker helps applicants to check their progress in the application process.
Express Entry, the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program, and the Canadian Experience Class are the four new economic immigration categories added to online application status tracker. This tracker was previously launched to only help candidates for the Provincial Nominee Program check and track their status online.
This tracker also helps the candidates stay updated on any necessary steps that they need to take to keep their applications moving. The trackers will help applicants gain a clear understanding of where they stand in the application pool given the vast number of applications awaiting consideration for Express Entry and various PNP programs. Additionally, the status trackers eliminate any potential delay, offering the candidates a smooth and hassle-free immigration experience.
The Express Entry program and the Provincial Nominee Program are two major economic immigration channels that immigrants use to get into Canada. As Canada is set to welcome almost 190,000 immigrants through these two channels solely this year, and the number is likely to go up to 230,000 immigrants in 2025, efficiency in the application process is the need of the hour. To make the process faster and clear out the huge backlog of applications waiting in the queue, the digital process will be very helpful.
Here is an insight into the number of in the pool for both the Express Entry and PNP program from January 31, 2023,
Immigration channel | Applications in the pool |
Express Entry | 47,868 |
PNP | 66,214 |
According to IRCC, the ministry's goal behind launching the is to increase the transparency of the PR process in Canada. The tracker is designed to cut down on wait times, and it will be available for other types of application processes in the coming months. The status tracker was first launched for Family Class permanent residency applicants by IRCC one year ago.
The already digitized programs by the IRCC
Last year, IRCC announced its plan to digitize the entire application process for permanent residency. Between September and October 2022, the IRCC made it possible to apply for the following programs online
- Provincial Nominee Program (Non-Express Entry)
- Quebec-Skilled Workers
- Sponsoring spouse or partner
- Sponsoring a Dependent Child
- Sponsoring an eligible relative
- Sponsoring an orphaned sibling, nephew or niece, grandchildren, etc.
- Adopting a child through immigration process
- Rural and Northern immigration pilot
These programs are made completely digitized along with other programs such as temporary resident holders applying for permanent residency, Atlantic immigration program, and several Quebec immigration programs such as Quebec-Selected investors, Quebec-Selected entrepreneurs, etc.
IRCC has already made the entire application process for citizenship online as well. Applicants over the age of 18 can already apply for citizenship online. However, applicants under the age of 18 and families applying for citizenship with a child who has not turned 18 yet must apply on paper for their citizenship.
