As part of the 2nd Express Entry draw of the week, IRCC Canada has issued 1,800 ITAs through a category-based selection draw for Trade Occupations. In order to be eligible applicants need to have a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 436.
The July 4th draw is the first category-based selection draw conducted since April 24 and the first draw for trade occupations since December 2023. As per the IRCC memo released in April, trade occupation draws would constitute 5% of all ITAs in category-based selection draws this year.
Since May 30, IRCC has been focusing on program-specific draws, with 3 out of 4 draws targeting PNP candidates. These program-specific draws only consider the candidates in the Express Entry pool who have applied through programs such as the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), or the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP).
For PNP-only draws, candidates are considered if they have received a nomination through an Express Entry-aligned stream of a PNP, known (a process known) as enhanced nomination.
This trend towards program-specific draws started earlier this year as part of IRCC's efforts to stabilize the number of temporary residents in Canada. One strategy is to offer more pathways to permanent residency (PR) for those already in Canada on work or study permits, or visitor visas.
Many temporary residents who apply for PR through the CEC or PNP have experience living in Canada. This helps IRCC meet its yearly targets for "Federal High Skilled Workers" as outlined in the Immigration Levels Plan, while also reducing the number of temporary residents in the country.
