All the immigrants to Canada through Express Entry managed programs are noted to have rapid increments in their median salary through their first 5 years of employment in Canada as stated by the Express Entry Year End Report 2023.
The data mentioned in the report (of Express Entry candidates admitted between 2016 to 2021) highlights that the median earnings of the newcomers to Canada through the Express Entry program have been higher compared to the Canadian-borns.
Increasing Immigrant Incomes in Canada
Ever since the introduction of Express Entry in 2015, Candidates have been consistently witnessing positive long-term economic outcomes. The 2023 Express Entry states that
- Candidates who were admitted in 2016, 1 year after i.e., in 2017 had a median salary of $58,400 which after 5 years increased to $76,000 i.e., in 2021.
- Similarly, newcomers admitted in 2018 had a median salary of $55,200 in their 1st year, which increased to $70,800 as of 3 years after admission in Canada.
- The median salary of Canadians was approximately in the same range throughout the 5 years, not notably lower compared to immigrants, starting at $38,006 in 2017 and rising to $40,870 by 2021.
- Applicants through Non-Express Entry programs like the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) witnessed a lower median salary ranging from $40,000 to $50,000 after 1 year of admission.
IRCC Canada Category-Based Selection in 2023
The newcomers admitted through Express Entry program, majorly arriving through the Federal Skilled Workers Program, are highly skilled professionals that are well suitable to meet the needs of Canada’s labor market demands. The selected ones are particularly shared ITA based on their high CRS score, which evaluates candidates’ in-demand human attributes.
IRCC taking this concept of CRS points further set the niche or specific category based section criteria for Express Entry draws for increased efficiency in skilled workforce integration into Canada as per the job market demands, where candidates with specific attributes are given priority like French language speakers, healthcare processions, etc rather than the overall CRS score.

Additional Scoring Factors have Low to No Impact on Incomes
While the report highlights that the median incomes could be influenced by the additional factors in an Express Entry application, these factors need not necessarily lead to higher median salaries 2 to 3 years after the admission (unless the particular candidate has the highest possible scores for these attributes). A few key highlights as mentioned in the report include
- Applicants who were admitted to Canada in 2019 with 3 or more years of post-secondary credentials from a Canadian institution had slightly higher median earnings compared to candidates without post-secondary credentials.
- Comparatively, applicants with 1-2 years of Canadian post-secondary credentials had lower median salaries in comparison to applicants with no Canadian post-secondary credentials (i.e., $51,000 vs. $61,100)
- Similar is the case with siblings in Canada applicants - they had a low median income i.e., $53,100 after 2 years of landing compared to applicants of without siblings in Canada had $61,200.
- Out of all Arranged Employment factor was the only additional scoring factor, which consistently led to higher median incomes (which varied depending on employment type)
- Applicants with pre-arranged management roles had a median salary exceeding $200,000 two years after landing in Canada, compared to those with pre-arranged employment in other occupations had a median salary of $84,500.
- However, this was comparatively higher for those without arranged employment which was around $60,700.
